Frequently Asked Questions
We are a second-generation, owner-hosted, off-grid lodge specializing in remote Alaskan wilderness experiences within the Kodiak Island Archipelago on Raspberry Island. Since 1983, we have deliberately developed the infrastructure required to support your experience here — including private, comfortable cabins, thoughtfully prepared meals, and state-of-the-art vessels and equipment designed to explore this coastline in comfort and confidence.
Coastal Kodiak has a maritime climate shaped by the Pacific. Summer temperatures typically range from the mid-50s to low 70s Fahrenheit, with a mix of sun, cloud cover, light rain, and coastal wind. Conditions can shift throughout the day.
Our cabins, vessels, and provided outdoor gear are designed for this environment, allowing guests to remain comfortable regardless of occasional rainy or windy coastal weather.
Each portion of our season offers something distinct. Early summer brings long daylight and active wildlife. Mid-season often aligns with peak salmon movement. Late summer and early fall center on our climactic river fishery for silver salmon. Rather than a single “best” time, the more meaningful question is: which experience you hope to emphasize? We are happy to help you align your timing with those priorities.
Many guests arrive with one primary focus — fishing, wildlife cruising, sea kayaking, hiking, or fly-out bear viewing — while others combine several activities within a single week. We discuss your interests in advance and shape the itinerary accordingly. Please visit our Reservations Page for a list of popular packages and experience exposure that are based around prior and returning guest choices.
We offer two standard package structures. The first includes a morning arrival, four full days of guided activities, four nights at the lodge, and departure on the morning of the fifth day. The second is slightly longer, with an afternoon arrival, five full days of activities, six nights at the lodge, and departure on the morning of the seventh day. Both offer a complete experience.
Yes. Guests may design a stay that includes multiple activities within the same visit. Members of the same group may also select different primary activity packages, provided the stays are of equal length. Because we operate multiple vessels and host a limited number of guests at a time, we are often able to accommodate varied interests within a single reservation. Planning occurs in advance so the schedule remains deliberate and cohesive.
Guests fly commercially to Kodiak, Alaska, typically through Anchorage. From Kodiak, your package includes transportation to the lodge by floatplane or boat, depending on your package, conditions and logistics. Detailed travel instructions are provided well in advance of your stay.
Our eight private cabins comfortably host between 12 and 18 guests at a time, maintaining a relaxed and uncrowded atmosphere. We never combine independent groups in the same cabin, and couples are always provided their own private cabin.
Meals are prepared daily in our open kitchen with a strong emphasis on Alaskan seafood. Breakfasts are substantial, freshly made field lunches travel with you, and dinners are plated and thoughtfully paced. We design one featured menu each day and are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies when communicated in advance, allowing our culinary team to prepare safely and appropriately without compromising the experience
We provide a detailed packing list prior to arrival. Layered synthetic clothing is recommended. We provide rubber boots, rain gear, and chest waders, reducing the need to pack bulky outerwear. Summer temperatures typically range from the 50s to 70s Fahrenheit.
Because we operate within a short seasonal window and host a limited number of guests each week, many dates fill well in advance. We open our calendar two years ahead, and many returning guests reserve their preferred dates as soon as it becomes available. We encourage you to book when you feel comfortable planning, and we are always happy to connect regarding last-minute openings or occasional cancellations.
A $500 per person deposit secures your dates with us. Fifty percent of the trip total is due by January 15 of the year of your visit, with the remaining balance due 60 days prior to arrival.
Deposits are non-refundable, except when weather delays or prevents arrival to the lodge from Kodiak City, or when scheduled activities are cancelled due to weather after arrival. In those cases, the affected portion of your package will be refunded accordingly, as outlined in our cancellation policy.
Gratuities are never expected, and your visit is genuinely appreciated. If you feel our team exceeded expectations, tips are certainly welcomed and help support our seasonal crew. Guests may contribute to a shared staff pool or tip individuals directly; Birch and Tiffany are not included, and fly-out bear viewing pilots and guides are tipped separately at your discretion. While entirely personal, a common tipping amount tends to be approximately 10% of the package total. Thank you.
Guests should plan for commercial airfare to Kodiak, Alaska, as well as fishing licenses and applicable tags. Beer and wine are included with your package; however, some guests choose to purchase specific beverages to bring with them. Optional expenses may include laundry service ($20 per load), items from our small on-site gift store, and gratuities for our team. We accept credit card payments in the main lodge for these incidental purchases.
