2014 was the first year I can remember that our halibut limit changed. While the Southeast Alaska sport fishery has been plagued by many, many slot limits and harvest limit reductions, our regulations now state that while we may still harvest 2 halibut per person per day, one must be 29 inches long or smaller.
This adjusted our technique a little in that more emphasis was either put on soaking for bigger halibut or on catching the other varieties of Salmon, Rockfish, Lingcod we have in abundance in our area. Quite frankly, it was a great halibut year for us with many very nice halibut harvested and many nice variety days, as well. The ‘chicken hole’ also remained productive and was typically ready to reveal a few smaller fish in a short amount of time for those of us looking for other species while still putting in a limit of sushi grade halibut.
