NEW IN 2025… One of Our Favorite Places to Unwind

When we designed our new cold plunge, we weren’t trying to follow a trend. We simply wanted to create another quiet place where our guests could connect with the landscape around them.

Nestled beside our outdoor jetted hot tub, not far from our banya (sauna) and overlooking Raspberry Strait, our new cold plunge has quickly become one of the most talked-about additions to the lodge.

Fresh mountain water flows continuously from the same pristine creek that powers our hydroelectric system, gently circulating through the tub before spilling over the recessed edge in a subtle infinity-style overflow. The water remains true Alaskan creek temperature—refreshingly cold, crystal clear, and constantly renewed.

There’s something uniquely invigorating about slipping into water that has traveled only moments before from the mountains above. The initial shock quickly gives way to a calm awareness (you’re body thinks its about to die). The sounds of flowing water, seabirds, and the occasional splash from Raspberry Strait replace the distractions of everyday life (because you’re panicking trying to get out of the freezing cold water).

Many of our guests have discovered that alternating between the hot tub and the cold plunge creates a memorable way to end a day of fishing, hiking, kayaking, or bear viewing. Some embrace the cold immediately, while others cautiously work their way in one step at a time (actually, most don’t even try it). Almost everyone climbs out smiling; (is that a smile?  When you’re uvula is pegged to the top of your throat as you desperately try to inhale, is that a smile?)—and more than a few return several times during their stay.

The cold plunge has also become a favorite gathering place in the evenings( because it’s funny to watch your buddy go through the above, and their facial expressions are priceless). With a drink in hand, stories from the day’s adventures, and an ever-changing view across the water, it offers another opportunity to slow down and simply enjoy being here. On calm evenings, the reflections across Raspberry Strait can be almost mirror-like. Other days, the wind reminds you just how wild this corner of Alaska can be (on these days we have more paperwork for you to sign before even thinking of the cold plunge).

We often say that Raspberry Island isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about experiencing Alaska. Sometimes that means watching a brown bear turn over rocks on the shoreline. Sometimes it’s seeing whales surface offshore or eagles soaring overhead. And sometimes, it’s taking a deep breath, stepping into an icy cedar tub filled with fresh mountain water, and (having a freezing cold brush with death itself) appreciating the simple luxury of being completely immersed in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Whether you’re a longtime cold-plunge enthusiast or someone who’s never considered trying one before, we invite you to give it a try(mmfft). We think you’ll discover what we’ve come to appreciate ourselves—that a few minutes in cold Alaskan water has a remarkable way of making the rest of the day feel just a little brighter.
