Stewardship on Raspberry Island

is not optional — it is essential. Here, environmental responsibility is not an abstract idea but a daily reality. Everything required to live and operate must arrive by boat or plane, and everything that leaves travels the same way. Efficiency is not theoretical; it is operational.
Our hydroelectric system has been operational since 2004. Designed with a trough-style feed and screened intake, it works with the natural flow of Iron Creek rather than damming it.
Over time, we have expanded the system to include multiple permanent-magnet hydro alternators, a large-format solar array, lithium iron phosphate battery storage, and dual 15 kW inverters. Together, these systems allow us to harvest and store renewable energy efficiently, providing continuous power with minimal reliance on our diesel backup generator and significantly reducing the volume of fuel transported to the island.
Waste management requires the same discipline. Our Advantex treatment system provides high-level filtration, allowing us to operate responsibly within a sensitive coastal environment.
Our partnership with Kodiak Island Brewing Company began in part as an effort to reduce bottles and cans. Serving beer on tap lowers freight weight and reduces landfill impact — practical decisions that matter in a place where nothing disappears easily.
Fuel efficiency also shapes our marine operations. Our hydrofoil-assist aluminum catamarans are a significant investment not only in comfort and safety, but in minimizing fuel burn across long coastal distances.
We know there is always room for improvement. Through continued investment in technology and daily practice, we strive to further reduce our impact on this remarkable coastline.
