The Gemini is our primary fishing platform, a 37′ x 12′ custom built, all aluminum Maxweld Catamaran. She is powered by twin Yanmar inline six cylinder diesel engines, each producing 315 horse power, connected to Italian made Sea Rider surface piercing drives. Each side can be fine tuned while trolling through separate trolling valves on each transmission. She cruises at 22 knots and burns about 16 1/2 gallons an hour. She easily seats six passengers plus crew inside her heated and fully enclosed cabin, has a full stand up private restroom, and oversized aft deck with full width swim step for handling fish quickly and efficiently. Her flush, self draining decks are not impeded by engine hatches and below decks self cleaning fish holds maximize fishing space and keep our catch clean, cool and wet.
Her new hydraulics package runs a Kinnematics Anchor Winch with 500′ of 1/2″ spectra anchor rode topped with 60′ of 3/8″ chain, all mounted to a 45lb Bruce anchor. This system lets us anchor in wind and depth, focusing all of our efforts on one spot, establishing a scent trail, and fishing wherever we want with precision. Next, a starboard located boom with Pullmaster PL1 hydraulic hoist quickly and easily deploys and retrieves our 14′ Alaska Series inflatable boat from it’s storage place topside for river fishing or beach combing excursions. Lastly, combined with the PL1, our 12″ pot puller can retrieve two Tanner crab pots, each fishing in over 300′ of water, lift the pots on deck, dump, rebait, and reset the pots in under a half an hour.
At the helm we have a new NavNet 3D electronics package from Furuno and are in the process of finalizing the synchronization of this system to Nobeltec Catch, a computer based software package that will display the Furuno inputs and will feature a Catch’s bathymetric recorder; basically as we fish the Furuno depth sounder will feed Catch, which will record this information and re-define and tune the 3D underwater environment, giving me acute and forever improving information on the structure that makes up underwater habitat. We will now be able to see everything we have known was there in 3D.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Gemini is arguably armed with the best fishing equipment available today. Halibut rods are Seeker Hercules rods with Accurate BX2 400 series two speed reels, loaded with 80lb braided line. Trolling rods are 9′ G. Loomis with Accurate 270 series reels loaded with 40lb Jerry Brown hollow core braid, topped with 40lb fluorocarbon leader. Everything above puts us in a position to be where the fish are, longer and more comfortably.
