Fly Fishing Kodiak Island for Silver (Coho) Salmon, Chum Salmon, and Pink Salmon is one of our specialties here at Raspberry Island Remote Camps.  Our climactic Silver Salmon are a superb game fish on a fly.  These fish average eight to fourteen pounds and can grow to over twenty pounds.  They can make long runs, acrobatic leaps, or hold deep.  They range from fickle to very aggressive, depending on the day and stage they are at in life.  We target them in the salt water, in estuaries as they enter shallow bays and lagoons, and in rivers as they return home to spawn.

Upon entering the same rivers they were born in, each salmon undergoes a transformation.  They have spent a life at sea, growing, feeding, and are bright silver and full of the energy that has helped them survive.  When they return to fresh water, they begin to stop feeding, they change in shape and color, and their table value is diminished.  We specifically target areas where we know they will be freshest from the ocean.  September is the magic month when our Silvers begin to concentrate near and in fresh water, and it is a hay day for our fly fisher men and women.    Many of our returning fly fishers request this month, and reservations are made early.

Earlier in the year we target the Pink Salmon, which, like all salmon, are returning home to spawn.  These fish abound, and schools of hundreds and thousands congregate at stream mouths in our area.  Ranging in size between three and five pounds, they readily take flies and put up a great fight on lighter gear.  Often mixed in with the Pinks we find Chum Salmon, also great fun on a fly rod, though not as numerous.  Other fish we can target are:  Dolly Varden, Sockeye Salmon, King Salmon, Rockfish, and even Halibut!  Please ask about special fly out packages targeting King and Sockeye Salmon on the Karluk and Ayakulik River.

Our guides are knowledgeable of the area, the fish, and the flies to use.  We are ready to help with anything you need, whether it is casting instruction, tying your flies on your leader, or netting and landing your fish.  We are also well aware some fly fishers consider all of that part of the experience, so we are just as happy to stand back and take your picture!  We supply all fly fishing equipment, though many guests prefer to bring their own favorite rods and reels.
